WHY DO WE BOW IN MARTIAL ARTS?

Giving and receiving respect are two sides of the same coin because both reflect a mutual recognition of value, dignity, and humanity. Here's how they are inherently connected:

Bowing is our way of showing our respect to others, this builds trust and loyalty.

1. Mutual Acknowledgment

When you give respect, you're acknowledging someone else's worth. When someone receives it well, they often reflect it back, creating a cycle of respect.

  • You bow in Taekwondo → They bow back.

  • You listen sincerely → They feel heard and are more likely to listen in return.

2. Respect Requires Receptivity

To truly give respect, you must also be open to receiving it—this means humility. If you can't receive respect (compliments, appreciation, recognition), it signals resistance, which can diminish mutual respect.

3. It Builds Trust

Respect is the foundation of trust. Giving it sincerely invites others to meet you at that level, creating relationships where both parties feel valued. That trust reinforces the respect you get back.

4. It Sets a Standard

When you treat others respectfully, you’re showing how you expect to be treated. People often rise—or fall—to the standards we set. Respect given becomes the model for respect returned.

5. Empathy and Equality

Respect recognizes others as equals in dignity, even if not in role or skill. Giving respect means acknowledging shared humanity. Receiving it is accepting that acknowledgment. It’s the same principle, expressed from different positions.

In essence, giving respect is an action; receiving it is an attitude. But both affirm the same truth: "You matter, and so do I."

Basic Bowing Etiquette:

  • Always greet your Instructor with a bow.

  • Always bow when entering and leaving the Dojang.

  • Always bow to higher grades upon greeting and when they help you.

  • Bow sincerely with feet together and eyes down. Approx 45 degrees.
